It’s been a busy week for me at work! I’ve gotten interest in wiki projects from several teams at work and I’ve been working hard to make sure everyone has the best possible experience with these tools. Below are some notes on the recent wiki experiences I’ve had.
Wikis Examined
- Dokuwiki – we are running one of these at a remote location and several teams are trying this out. It is working well as a document repository so far and it has separate namespaces available for sorting documents.
- I am filling this one up with documentation for my team and a few related teams are also using it for knowledge base purposes. The backend appears to be text files stored to the server’s hard drive that are backed up nightly via a script.
- MediaWiki - I set up MediaWiki in a virtual machine here to test out some features I recognized from Wikipedia.
- This one seems to require MySQL though and since our infrastructure is mostly Microsoft-based it will probably be a tough sell.
- MS Sharepoint Wiki - This one has been recommended to me because our organization has Sharepoint licensed and installed already. I’ll be testing it thoroughly next week and trying to figure out which scenarios it can best fit.
Have a safe and happy weekend everyone!
