I just got back from an exciting session at the September edition of Social Media Breakfast Memphis. Just like last time, I met some interesting people and had a great time learning and sharing with social media enthusiasts from a wide range of local businesses. For an introduction to social media breakfasts check out my log of the first one I attended last month.
What we shared
- Community Management as an emergent discipline with Connie Bensen as a recommended leader in the field. See one of Connie’s recent contributions to the community in a recent post.
- Debbie Neal and Dave Barger discussed strategies for keeping a consistent identity across multiple social networks.
- Group consensus was that Facebook is a good first stop for anyone looking to dive into social media. Susan Mealer, Debbie, and Lindsey (sorry, forgot the last name) all shared different anecdotes on the Facebook privacy model.
- New tools from Google – the Chrome browser and the Ubiquity “bringing the semantic web to you” Firefox extension.
- Lots of talk about the upcoming Sarah Lacy book tour event coming to downtown Memphis on the 18th. See Sarah’s site for some background.
- Dave discussed the upcoming BarCampMemphis, covering the wiki we’re using to organize the event as well as some new publicity tools for the event. Check out the BarCamp widget in the sidebar here – you can click to get one for your site.
Presentation
Dave was kind enough to ask me to demo social|median, a new user-driven news sharing community. With s|m you can build your own news networks to find and share stories that are relevant to you. See my social|median profile here.
-
- Seth Agronov wondered how news gathered by an s|m network can be found by external users. Social|median founder Jason Goldberg chipped in with a quick explanation via twitter: All s|m stories are indexed by Google.
- Joe Spake wanted his social|median news clips to be shared into his Facebook account. Let’s let Mr. Goldberg know and see what his plans for Facebook integration are.
How to get involved with SMB Memphis
Sign up for the next event and then join the conversation at our Facebook group. Let’s share stories and links about today’s topics and then build a list of new topics and presentations for the October breakfast.
Thanks to everyone for participating, especially Dave Barger and Blake Palmer from Lunaweb for running the show. I know I’ve left off a few of the people who contributed to this morning’s session, and I apologize for not remembering to jot down everyones’ names. I hope to see you all again in November – unfortunately I’ll be in Dallas for a training course during the October breakfast.
How to find or start your own local Social Media Breakfast
Not in the Memphis area? Head to the main Social Media Breakfast site or tweet SMB founder @bryanperson. Bryan can help find your nearest SMB or start your own. He’s recently relocated to Austin, TX and is already participating in breakfasts there.
