How do you connect with people when you’re traveling outside of your comfort zone? I found this question today on Stack Overflow:
In past [conferences] I’ve run into a large number of my fellow Orthodox Jews and it turns out everyone is praying in his own hotel room because nobody ever organized anything together. So now I’ve arranged for the closest rabbi to help me organize something and I can’t figure out how I’ll get the word out to others who would be interested. How can I get the word out and, ideally, get it to go viral?
Giovanni Gallucci’s geek dinner in Dallas two weeks ago provides a good example on how to coordinate events online without the benefit of a long lead time. Giovanni set up an event and then publicized it on as an event on Facebook and Upcoming. He then linked to those event calendars on Twitter, Pownce, Delicious, and FriendFeed. I didn’t realize the extent of his quick publicity blitz until after I attended the event, but it seemed to work out pretty well.
A related idea I’ve been tossing around lately is having contact information embroidered on my shirt for particularly geeky meetups. I keep meaning to try that before BarCamp Memphis in November. It ought to be more fun than business cards.
