Got some much-needed brain food at BarCamp

“You Suck at Social Media” presentation by Bob Hazlett

BarCampMemphis finally arrived two days ago and blew my mind.  88 excited Tennesse-area professionals piled into the ground floor of a cozy downtown office complex (LaunchMemphis) and talked themselves silly.  There was a lot to like; here are some highlights.

Awesome sessions
Check out the Zoho wiki we threw up mid-session if you’d like to see the schedule for the conference.  My only regret was that I couldn’t be in two sessions at once.  I especially regret missing sessions on WordPress, Rails, and digital video.  There were some entrepreneurship talks I could’ve used as well.

Serendipity
My presentation on FriendFeed ran into some glitches early on: the projector didn’t handle my orange on grey color scheme at all and my screenshots were too tiny to be seen in the back row.  Luckily I’d opted to use my own laptop for the presentation.  I spent most of the session on my knees in front of the laptop zooming around the internets at maximum velocity with my browser’s zoom dial cranked up to 11.*

The absolute best part of presenting was when I ran out of slides and the session disintegrated from a structured talk about FriendFeed to a manic “check out these crazy things people are doing with news streams and RSS feed recombination!” blur.  Many thanks to everyone who asked a question - you saved the session from being lame!

A word of thanks
BarCamp couldn’t have happened without the tireless efforts of the organizers and sponsors.  I am sorry that I didn’t get to participate more in the planning process but I hope my energy on the big day helped make up for it.  There were so many great people and interesting sessions there that I just can’t fit all of the deserving people into this space. I’ll be thinking of ways to point out the great things we saw this weekend.  When I figure it out you’ll be the first to know.
