Another option you may want to check out is expresswayvideo.com. This is flash-based video, audio and text chat software. The interface is made in Adobe Flex, which makes it different than some of the other options listed on this blog. Another nice thing about it is you can buy the license outright, so it is ideal if you are starting a video chat business yourself, or just want to install it on your website with no usage restrictions.

Flash is not open source but rather commercial software and many Ubuntu users like to use Gnash, which is open source and not commercial. The catch 22 is that Adobe is closing the door on open source which means that Gnash in the future may not work properly with all Flash sites, including video chat sites. This means that once again, Linux users who use Ubuntu will be left in the dark. What are alternatives to Flash based video conferencing/chat for Ubuntu users. Programs like Cam Frog or iVisit?

II have my volume turned all the way up on my computer and I still can't really understand what you are trying to say. I have tried head phones and ear phones and still just get mumbling some times, because the background hiss is so loud it competes with your voice. Try moving your microphone closer to where you are sitting and talking louder. Maybe you are in a cubical and are unable to speak louder. Try asking for a cubical with acoustic tile or try using a better microphone such as the inexpensive CAD U37 USB Studio Condenser microphone. The sound will amaze you.

Damon at TokBox support has already gotten back to me with this possibly helpful article on Flash and webcams under Linux. I'll give it a spin the next time I reboot into Ubuntu! Note to the TokBox team: Great choice using GetSatisfaction to publicly track and resolve some user issues. The transparency and accountability there are very comforting in comparison to the usual email.
